ACURA MDX
When you’re shopping for a capable vehicle in Sherman Oaks, CA, you’ll likely encounter the terms “all-wheel-drive” and “four-wheel-drive.” Understanding the SH-AWD® vs. 4WD distinction is key to appreciating how these two systems represent different technologies designed for different purposes. Here at Acura of Sherman Oaks, we want to break down the differences in these systems.

What is Traditional 4WD?

Four-wheel-drive, or 4WD, is typically a part-time system found on trucks and body-on-frame SUVs. It’s designed for extreme off-roading situations and low-traction driving. The driver usually has to manually engage the system, which locks the front and rear axles together and often includes a low-range gear that provides maximum torque.

What is a Standard AWD System?

All-wheel-drive, or AWD, is an automated, full-time system that is typically found on cars and crossovers. It’s designed primarily for on-road performance and safety. An AWD system works by automatically detecting wheel slip and sending power to the wheels that have the most grip. This provides enhanced stability and confidence in wet or slippery conditions without requiring any driver input.

What is Acura Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive™?

Found on several new Acura SUVs and sedans, the Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive™ system, or SH-AWD®, is a more performance-oriented and sophisticated evolution of traditional AWD systems. In addition to distributing power between the front and rear wheels, SH-AWD® also distributes power between the left and right rear wheels. This is a process known as torque vectoring. Sending more power to the outside rear wheel when you’re turning helps the vehicle take corners more sharply and precisely.
