The Acura repair shop here at Acura of Sherman Oaks is dedicated to keeping your vehicle safe. Since your tires play a significant role in everything from vehicle handling to safety, we’re taking a moment to look at what you should do if your tires suffer damage on a future drive.

Tire Puncture Repairs Explained

Tire punctures can occur at any time. They may be caused by nails, glass, or other sharp objects on the open road. If you notice that your tire has a puncture, you want to pull your vehicle over to the side of the road as soon as possible. It can be very unsafe to drive on a punctured tire, and, depending on the size of the puncture, you likely won’t be able to get very far.

If you have a repair kit, you may be able to patch the tire just long enough to get to the repair shop. Once you’re here, our team can assess the damage and determine whether the tire can be repaired or needs to be replaced. Here are some of the types of punctures that can be repaired:

  • Damages to the center tread of the tires
  • Punctures ¼ of an inch or smaller
  • Two punctures more than 16 inches apart
  • Punctures that don’t overlap existing damage

Any punctures that damage the walls of the tires that are larger than ¼ of an inch in diameter, that are close together, or that overlap previous repairs are ineligible for repairs, and the tire will need replacing.
